Warehouse employee quits after 4 days when expected to work 12 hour shifts with no lunchbreak: 'Fastest I've ever quit a job'

It takes abysmal working conditions to make a person walk out of a job in a matter of days.

The vast majority of employees do what they do because they need the money, so it is usually no small decision to give up on a professional role that fast. In this job market in particular, they likely have no idea where they are going next, or where the next pay packet is coming from. They know that it is in their best interests to stay employed, unless the employment in question is legitimately worse than the pain of unemployment.

For companies, the time and resources it takes to get new hires are also an expense that we might think is something that they would want to avoid. A high turnover can be costly. Despite this, there are a lot of employers who do not seem to care less about retaining their workers, and treat them accordingly. They are interested in the value for money that they get in the here and now, and the other consequences do not matter. In these kinds of places, a lot of people quit simply because they feel that they are given no other viable option.

A warehouse worker detailed how he set a new record for the fastest time he had ever quit a job, thanks to his most recent role. He spent several days working twelve hour shifts in a place where it was legal for employers not to have mandatory breaks. Going without his lunch break the entire time, he eventually decided that enough was enough, and that he couldn't do it any more.
Just quit a job after 4 days. No lunch break during 12 hours of work.
“Won't say much more. It was a warehouse job. They made us work 12 hours straight with no 30 minute lunch. I asked my supervisor twice when lunch would be (once after 6 hours, the other after 9 hours). I was dismissed/denied. In my state, there are no mandatory breaks required for employees (only for minors).”

Much like relationships, it is often a good thing when a job shows all of its red flags early on. It saves an employee from becoming invested in the role to the point that leaving it behind has an even more negative impact on their life than it would otherwise. It also serves as good experience, in the sense that it gives a job seeker a better idea of what kind of thing they should try to avoid.
